The project comprises the fit out and extension of the old Emergency Department at the University Hospital Limerick to provide a 20 bed Medical Short Stay Unit (MSSU) and the first phase of the Acute Fractures Clinic. It is located in a very busy area at the main entrance to the hospital and surrounded by live hospital departments which had to remain fully operational through out the works.
The existing internal fit out was extensively stripped out, and replaced with a new layout crafted around the existing structural columns and service shafts. A high triangular glazed extension provides waiting space for patients and allows light to filter deeper into the existing plan areas improving the quality of the internal environment. It required the reconfiguration of the OPD entrance forecourt and Fire Tender access to the Phase 1 hospital street.
