To meet the growing demand for energy efficient buildings required in the context of the global climate emergency, the government is establishing a number of training centres across the country specialising in construction methods for producing ‘Nearly Zero Energy Buildings’. Accordingly, Limerick Clare Education and Training Board has developed an NZEB Training centre at Limerick Enterprise Development Partnership (LEDP)  in one of the existing units in what was the old Krups factory at Roxboro,  Childers Road in Limerick City.

The original Krups factory is characterised by classic north facing sawtooth rooflights which are retained allowing generous natural light to filter into the space providing a controlled semi- external environment for teaching construction techniques. The design conceives the centre as a large exhibition space accommodating a range of installations illustrating the many and various systems and construction methods available for improving energy standards and reducing carbon emissions to assist in the educational and training process. For example, the classroom is provided in the main exhibition space and is itself designed using multiple wall construction techniques. Each wall type is effectively de-constructed to reveal the wall build up and the various materials and construction techniques are permanently on display to enable a better understanding of the whole construction process required in each case. The project also includes many samples of mechanical and electrical systems available for efficient energy design many of which can be assembled and disassembled as part of the training process.
