The project included a Development Control Plan for the Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar in 2002 comprising Ward Refurbishment, Maternity Unit including Obstetrics Gynaecology and Special Care Baby Unit, Entrance Concourse, Acute Elderly Unit, Operating Theatres Day Hospital, Endoscopy, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Laboratory and Acute Adult Psychiatric Unit, main entrance concourse and forecourt along with car parking facilities. The first stage of the project was practically complete in March 2009.
The completed project required complex phasing in respect of the ward refurbishment whereby the west wing of the existing butterfly plan form was first fitted out, providing space for the subsequent decanting of the east wing which was then fully refurbished.
The project required the surrounding existing hospital to remain fully operational for the duration of the works and required detailed co-ordination to be carried out with the hospital technical services throughout. It contained many specialist installations and services including boiler & calorifier plants, high voltage electrical distribution systems, energy management systems, along with all of the normal medical and safety systems required in an acute regional hospital.
